The administration promised long-term savings through economies of scale when the academic and administrative computing services were merged in 2000. Instead, the headcount in these combined service areas has doubled while the operating budget has tripled.

One of the recommendations included in the Elert Report was to create a Chief Information Officer (CIO) position. The report also indicated that the CIO reporting responsibility should be reviewed, since only 20% of institutions similar to Washburn University have this position reporting to the VPAT.

The Elert Report

An IT organizational and staffing study was conducted by Elert & Associates in the Fall, 2004. The Study offered recommendations in the areas of planning, organizational structure, communications, and resource allocation.

Technology in the Classroom

Resources allocated to academic computing are woefully inadequate at the same time that resources for administrative computing seem unlimited.
