President Jerry Farley's FY06 Salary Increase
On July 29, 2005, the Board of Regents approved a 4% salary increase for President Farley, increasing his annual compensation from $192,600 to $200,300. A contract that includes tenure if he returns to teaching, after a one-year paid sabbatical, is to be prepared for the Board to consider at their September 9, 2005 board meeting. With annual salary increases that have ranged from 4% to 11%, this is one of the more reasonable pay adjustments given by the Board.
Funds for a 9% increase were included in uncommitted salaries in the President's Office operating budget. After the salary increase of $7,700 is reassigned to his salary line, $13,600 will remain in uncommitted salaries.
Since salary increases at Washburn University are performance based, hopefully the Board considered the elements of Jerry's performance that include double digit tuition increases over the past two years, an astronomical increase of University debt, and numerous unexplained terminations of qualified employees at Washburn University and WEA.
President Farley's salary is relatively high when compared to CEO salaries of the other public Kansas higher education institutions. His FY05 salary was just slightly less than that of Wichita State's university president, where the FY04 enrollment was double the Washburn University level.
